Timaru Attractions and Activities

Timaru is a port city in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand, located 157 kilometres southwest of Christchurch and about 196 kilometres northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island

Caroline Bay Beach

Caroline Bay is the most widely known of all the parks in the Timaru District. When speaking to some from outside Canterbury about Timaru they will usually mention Caroline Bay, whereas locals will often refer to it as 'The Bay'.

The beach is sheltered by the harbour breakwater and is the only sandy beach between Oamaru and Banks Peninsula. March 2014 saw Caroline Bay beach being voted the most popular beach in the South Island.

South Canterbury Museum

The museum has permanent exhibitions on local natural history, heritage (Maori and early settlers) with detailed information, photos, costumes and artefacts. At the time of visit, there was a special exhibition on NZ's participation in World War One (not the same as the one held in Canterbury Museum in Christchurch).

Te Ana Maori Rock Art

Te Ana provides personalised, authentic Maori cultural experiences based around the rock art art sites created by our ancestors. We offer guided tours of our Maori Rock Art Centre, Te Ana, and guided tours to some of the districts most stunning examples of Maori rock drawings, also known as cave art. We are a Maori owned not-for-profit organisation - 100% of the proceeds of our centre and site tours are used for the management of the rock art sites in the district. By choosing Te Ana you are helping us to protect this unique aspect of our culture for future generations. Kia ora!
